Fort Wayne Housing Authority - YouthBuild Construction Trainer
About the Role
The YouthBuild Construction Trainer plays a vital role in mentoring and training young adults (typically ages 16–24) in essential construction skills as part of the national YouthBuild program. YouthBuild combines education, vocational training, and leadership development to help participants earn their high school diploma or equivalent while gaining hands-on job experience.
As a Construction Trainer, you will provide on-site instruction and supervision in various construction trades, while fostering positive relationships and supporting a transformative, inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
Deliver hands-on, quality instruction in a range of construction skills aligned with NCCER credential standards, including demolition, framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, sheet metal work, and masonry.
Teach proper use, handling, and safety procedures for hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
Supervise and maintain safety standards on the construction site; serve as site lead in the absence of the Construction Manager.
Assist with project planning, material needs, and coordination with subcontractors and inspectors.
Help students develop leadership, vocational, and personal skills alongside other YouthBuild staff.
Observe, evaluate, and provide feedback on student progress, offering coaching and recognition.
Develop and implement project-based curricula that integrate construction learning.
Support behavior management and provide mentorship to YouthBuild members.
Track attendance, training activities, student milestones, and maintain accurate records.
Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and planning of YouthBuild program events.
Assist with program marketing, public outreach, and grant-related activities.
Promote FWHA and YouthBuild’s mission, values, and brand through all interactions.
Foster a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment for all participants and staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum of journey-level or technician-level experience in the construction trade OR at least three years of experience teaching in a vocational/technical construction or maintenance-related program.
Valid driver’s license and insurability under FWHA’s plan.
Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills with a demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships.
Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and creating a sense of belonging for all participants.
Willingness to complete the YouthBuild USA Instructor Certification Training Program (ICTP) to become certified as an NCCER Craft Instructor.
Preferred:
1 to 3 years of experience working with at-risk youth or young adults in a non-mandated program.
Experience in community college or higher education settings.
